THE FIRST VINEYARD
The charme of the living things
The vineyard where Steccofino was born dates back to the 1960s and retains rare characteristics thanks to the uniqueness of its old vines, which have organoleptic and qualitative properties totally different from new plants. It is not surprising, therefore, that the traditional Tuscans (Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Trebbiano Bianco) are next to the French Merlot, according to an ancient tradition also foreseen by the Discipline lucchese, which provides for the simultaneous presence of native vines and European ones.
It follows the traditional planting standard and a traditional cultivation system, (guyot), with a density of more than 4,500 vines per hectare. The rows are exposed to the south to support the natural slope of the ground and the average distance on the row is 80 cm.
So, the vineyard is wrapped in the golden light of the afternoon, which changes its appearance to the seasons, preserving the charm of living things. It is ripped in autumn to oxygenate the soil and grows in the summer to preserve its natural equilibrium. The soil is sandy, rich in magnesium, while the groundwater guarantees a constant water reserve, which allows it to not be irrigated even during periods of increased drought.
The vineyard produces no more than 12/14 quintals of wine in the best seasons, down to 8/9 quintals due to seasonality and the fact that the vines are very old.
The wine has a marked acidity, which keeps it fresh and well harmonizes with the roundness of the wood, where it ages before being clarified, bottled and placed on the market.
THE NEW VINEYARD
we keep on cultivating our dreams
Located in San Martino in Vignale, 150 mt. on the sea level, the last vineyard has an area of 5000 mq. and it will be productive from the harvest of 2021, where it is estimated to collect about 24 ql. of wine.
Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah and Vermentino were implanted in the following proportions:
Red grapes: 55% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 15% Syrah.
White Grapes: 100% Vermentino.
THE VINEYARD OF ARSINA
perfect position, outstanding view
Arsina is a hilly area about 200 mt. on the sea level. To get there we cross roads traced in the fields, along which new villas and ancient dwellings spring up, but above all vineyards and olive groves.
Near a crossroads, dominated by an old Crucifix, the road gives a tear and becomes unpaved, smaller, without losing, indeed fueling, its fairy-tale and naturally magical dimension. It runs alongside olive trees for a short distance until the vineyard opens to the south, under it: a stunning location to enjoy a breathtaking view.
Paolo Ricci, owner of the land, purchased it at the end of the 90’s with about 1800 screws to work exclusively by hand, because the rows are close to each other and have been obtained by taking away the olive trees. Soil composition and exposure, however, guarantee absolute quality assurance.
The first screws of Sangiovese date back to the mid 70s; about 700 screws were reintegrated by Mr. Ricci, entering Merlot, Colorino, Malvasia and Candia.
From November 2016, Arsina was taken over by Ferdinando Biagiotti and over 300 vines were replanted between Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot and Vermentino. The 2017 harvest will produce around 15/16 quintals of wine, which will rise to 18/19 in the next four years.
